Simple Samhain Ritual

Merry meet everyone! The autumn is passing so quickly, I can't believe Samhain is almost here! To celebrate the season, I am sharing a Simple Samhain Ritual I do each year to honor and remember friends and family that have passed over. Let me know what you all think and have a great Samhain!

Simple Samhain Ritual to Honor Passed Loved Ones

What You Need:
Dried Dandelion Leaf in a shallow dish
Cinnamon Oil
Black Pillar Candle
Photos and mementos of passed loved ones and ancestors, and a tea light or votive candle for each
Herbs, plants and fruits of the season (apples, nuts. small gourds, etc.)

Decorate your altar with photos and mementos of your ancestors, family members, friends and relatives that have passed.

Cast a circle and close your eyes, concentrating on the energy around you. Samhain has an otherworldly feel to it; the very air itself seems to vibrate with spiritual energy.

Focusing on this magickal night, anoint the black pillar candle with Cinnamon oil and roll it in the shallow plate of Dandelion leaf. Place the pillar in the center of the altar, light it, and say:

On this Samhain eve, when the veil between worlds is thinnest, I welcome all my loved ones who have passed into this circle round.  This is a night for honoring ancestors and remembering dear friends and family members who have passed through the veil before me. Welcome!

One by one, light a candle in front of each photo or memento of your passed loved ones to welcome them into the circle. As you light each candle, spend some time remembering and honoring them. Speak to them if you wish, or just sit quietly as their presence envelopes you.

When you have finished, say:

Honored ancestors and loved ones, thank you for joining me in this circle tonight. Though you are no longer with me in the physical plane, you live on in my heart and memories, and I know we will be reunited, either in Summerland or in our next lives. Farewell and blessed be!

Now, one by one, blow out each candle, saying Farewell and blessed be, to each one as you do, then blow out the black pillar and close the circle. If possible, leave the photos and mementos out on your altar or a shelf and place an offering in front of them, such as apples, nuts, small gourds, or some other type of seasonal fruit or herb. In the morning, take the offering outside and leave it for the wildlife.

Simple Mabon Celebration

I can't believe it's September already! Fall is upon us and the wheel of the year is once again about to turn!

Mabon (September 23)

Mabon, also known as the autumn equinox, falls on September 23rd this year. On the autumn equinox, day and night are equal in length. After this day, the sun begins to wane and the earth readies itself for the coming of winter, just as the God prepares for his impending death and rebirth at Samhain and Yule.

Mabon is the second harvest festival and the official start of fall. Sometimes known as the Witches’ Thanksgiving, it is a time to give thanks to the God and Goddess for all we have been blessed with.

Simple Mabon Thanksgiving Ritual

To celebrate Mabon this year, the following is a simple thanksgiving ritual you can perform this September:

Offering plate or bowl
Some kind of food to be offered in thanks, such as apples, grapes, corn, grain, acorns, pine nuts, or even bird seed.

Find a comfortable place outside where you won’t be disturbed. Sit cross-legged on the earth and find your center. Breathing deeply, open your senses to the energies around you. Feel the sun warming your skin, the breeze ruffling through your hair, the earth, calm and steady, cradling your body.

Concentrate on your root chakra at the base of your spine, the part of your body touching the earth beneath you. Visualize roots sprouting from here, burrowing into the soil, sinking deep into the earth below.

When you inhale, imagine those roots drawing energy up into your root chakra from deep within the earth. Allow this energy to travel up along your spine, feeling it's warmth tingle along your nerves. When you exhale, circle this energy throughout your whole body, filling your chest, your abdomen, your mind.

Continue inhaling the autumn’s energies, feel it swirling within you, filling you with the season’s strength and spirit.

When you’ve absorbed all the energy you can, open your eyes and lift the offering you’ve prepared. Say the following while sending the energy from your hands into the offering:

After today, the night grows darker,
And the Earth prepares for her winter slumber.
The long days of summer come to an end
As autumn sweeps in, stripping leaves from trees,
And Earth’s bounty is harvested from Her fields.

I give thanks to the Lord of the Sun,
For His days of summer warmth and fun.
I give thanks to the Lady of the Field,
For Her life-giving and bountiful yield.

I thank you, Lord and Lady, for all that I have.
For all that I am.
For all that I will become.
Blessed be.

Take your offering and place it outside somewhere—at the base of a tree, the middle of a field, at a special place in your garden—anywhere wild animals will find it and be able to feast upon your gift.

Feel free to comment on this simple ritual and I hope everyone has a fantastic Mabon!

Spell to Release Negativity

Here is a sample spell from my upcoming book, Simple Candle Spells, coming this fall. Let me know what you think!

To Release Negative Energy

Candle: Black for repelling negativity (Can substitute with white for purification)

Oil: Lavender, Dragon’s Blood, Mint, Sandalwood, or Rosemary. (Optional)

Rune: Sowilo  for cleansing fire

Sit on the ground comfortably with the candle in front of you. Spend a few minutes staring into the candle flame, concentrating on the issue or problem causing the buildup of negativity in you. Really try to get to the root of what’s bothering you, keeping your gaze trained on the flame.

Once you’ve figured out the source of the negative energy, place a drop of oil on your finger tip and draw the rune Sowilo on your chest (if you don’t have oil or have sensitive skin, simply draw the symbol on your chest without oil). As you repeat the following lines, visualize a white light bathing you from above, cleansing the anger and negativity from your body:

Sun and fire cleanse my energy,
Banish all negativity.
All anger, depression, and anxiety be gone,
Only positive energies welcome from here on.
Free me from darkness, return me to light,
May my spirit be pure, serene, and bright.

If you can, set the candle in a safe area and let it burn out on its own. If that’s not possible, snuff it out and bury the remains in the Earth.

Simple Witchcraft Basics

Witchcraft is an earth-based religion steeped in magick and history, reconstructed from pagan practices and beliefs dating back before Christianity. Although beliefs among different traditions of Wicca and Witchcraft have their own particular beliefs, most traditions agree upon these basic principles:

Witches believe that the divine is in nature; nature is sacred, and must therefore be respected and protected. The pentacle represents our connection to nature and the natural elements, earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, which are represented by the 5 points on the pentacle.

Most witches, including myself, believe that the divine is both masculine and feminine; that there is both a God and a Goddess, and all of the Gods and Goddesses from various pantheons represent different aspects of this one God and Goddess, much the same way that the Holy Trinity (father, son and holy spirit) is all part of the one God in Christianity.

Witches do not worship Satan. In fact, we do not even believe that such a being exists, nor do we believe in hell or sin. Satan, hell, and sin are part of Christianity, not Witchcraft.

Witches believe in the Rule of Three: What you give is returned to you threefold. This means that whatever energy you send out is returned to you times three. This is why Witches always strive to do good and only send out positive energy; if you use magick to hurt someone, that negative energy will rebound on you threefold, either in this life or the next.

We seek to live in harmony with nature and its cycles. We celebrate the turning of the seasons and the cycles of the moon.

Every one of us has the ability to enact meaningful change in their life and the world around us through prayer, ritual, and magick. We all have the ability to call upon and interact with the divine; we do not require a priest or select group of clergy to communicate to the divine on our behalf—we are all equally important and equally loved by the Goddess and God.

We believe in live and let live. We do not try to convert other people to our religion. Everyone has the right to believe what they want and practice what feels right and natural to them. We respect other people’s personal and religious beliefs and wish for them to accord us the same respect.

Welcome to my new Simple Witchcraft Series!

Hello everyone, and merry meet! I'm Cassandra Larsen, author of the fantasy series The Witches Circle. Witchcraft is a subject near and dear to my heart, as I have been practicing it myself for almost 10 years. I've decided to branch out from fiction to begin a different project teaching witchcraft to novices in my new non-fiction Simple Witchcraft Series ©, to be published early this fall.

I understand how difficult it can be to be drawn to this beautiful and fulfilling Earth-based religion and not have the money to buy the expensive books or tools that others deem necessary. Many of the books on Wicca and Witchcraft I read when I was first starting out required expensive tools and lengthy, complex rituals that were hard for me to follow and understand. In my new Simple Witchcraft Series, I will share my own simple, yet effective, spells that anyone can do, regardless of experience or budget.

I am a firm believer that simple rituals and spells can be just as meaningful and effective as complex ones—if not more so—as long as you have the will and the desire to enact change in your life.

I started this blog in the hopes of helping others who are just starting out on their journey; an easy to follow how-to guide full of simple, yet powerful spells that will change your life.

This blog is designed for people like you, who are just beginning to discover this life-changing, soul-defining path, and desire a clear, simple guide to show them the way to creating powerful magick without spending hundreds of dollars on expensive tools or manuals.
